What Is Patina?

A patina is the surface character of metal, sometimes the result of time and weather, sometimes created deliberately through heat and chemistry.

Most patinas today are made by hand, building the surface layer by layer with carefully applied chemicals and controlled heat. Each reaction is slightly different depending on the metal, and that variation is part of the beauty.

Some patinas feel aged and natural, others bold and contemporary, but no two are ever exactly the same. That uniqueness is what makes patination such a powerful part of the creative process.

The Patination Process
Patination is the art and science of altering a metal’s surface to create depth, colour, or a sense of age. It’s a mix of chemistry, temperature, timing, and experience

  • 1. Clean

We prepare the surface by removing dirt, grease, and oxidation.

  • 2. Prime

Depending on the final finish, we sand, abrade, or otherwise prepare the metal to ensure the patina develops as intended.

  • 3. Patinate

The metal is heated, then treated with a series of chemical applications, applied by hand, brush, or spray, building the colour in fine layers.

  • 4. Seal

The final finish is protected with wax or lacquer, depending on its use and maintenance needs.

What Metals Can We Patinate?

Although bronze and brass are the most common materials, beautiful patinas can be achieved on many ferrous and non-ferrous metals. We regularly work with:

  • Bronze

  • Brass

  • Copper

  • Mild & Stainless Steel

  • Cast Iron

  • Aluminium

  • Zinc

  • Resin & Mixed Media
